What is a couples intensive?

A couples intensive is a transformative therapy experience designed to help you make meaningful progress in your relationship over the course of a single weekend. Whether you’re rebuilding trust after a betrayal, breaking free from cycles of constant conflict, or rekindling connection in the face of busy lives, a couples intensive offers the space and focus you need to address your unique challenges.

This immersive process allows you to step away from daily distractions and dedicate concentrated effort to strengthening your partnership. During your intensive, we’ll uncover the root causes of your relationship’s struggles, explore patterns of communication and behavior, and tackle emotional triggers that may be fueling disconnection.

Using proven methods like the Gottman framework and culturally responsive care, we’ll work together to foster greater understanding, improve communication, and create lasting connection. Whether your goal is to heal, grow, or reconnect, a couples intensive provides the tools and support to move forward—together.

FAQS

Common questions about intensives for couples

  • Couples intensives include two phases — the assessment phase and the treatment phase. During the assessment phase, we’ll identify your areas of strength and grow and customize a treatment plan. In the treatment phase, we will focus on resolving old wounds, installing new communication and conflict management skills, and rebuilding your connection during structured, 1-2 day long sessions.

We’ll have an hour-long lunch break each day and as many short breaks as you need.

Also, as the name implies, intensives can be intense. Many find it helpful to have unscheduled time following an intensive so they can engage in self-care activities.

  • Most couples can benefit from the intensive format, though there are certain factors that are better treated in weekly couples therapy or individual therapy.

The following criteria would not be the right fit for an intensive: unresolved drug and/or alcohol use problems, serious violence or the threat of serious violence within the relationship, untreated serious mental illness (psychosis, bipolar disorder, etc.) or active suicidal or homicidal ideation, an ongoing, unrevealed affair that a partners is no willing to end or reveal to their partner.

When considering a virtual intensive, it’s best to identify a location where you can stay comfortably, with minimal distraction, for several hours in a row.
